New Gym for Physically-Challenged Opens in Lawndale, CA

NextStep Fitness is now accepting memberships to its newly unveiled state-of-the-art, specialized gym in Lawndale, California. Featuring fully accessible and adaptive equipment, NextStep Fitness is a non-profit organization that offers personalized fitness and wellness programs for the underserved community of para- and tetraplegics as well as others with neurological impairments in greater Los Angeles County.

In addition to Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) bicycles, the 3,600 square foot facility will also offer Locomotor Training, a unique body weight supported system in which participants are suspended in a parachute-type harness over a treadmill and leg movements are manually-assisted by therapists to help patients perform stepping movements.

“Through our specialized facility and unique expertise, we strive to improve levels of independence and quality of life through personalized fitness and wellness,” said founder Janne Kouri, a C-5/6 quadriplegic. “NextStep looks forward to working with Life Rolls On to create awareness about, educate and promote action in the fight against paralysis.”
